THE FLAMBOYANT AND THE BOHEMIAN:
GREENWICH VILLAGE AND HOW IT BECAME FAMOUS
August 30, 2008

On Saturday, August 30, 2008, Manhattan historian Joyce Gold will present a walking tour
of the history highlights of Greenwich Village.

Washington Square Park
Greenwich Village is one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in the most dynamic city in the world. Hundreds of years of history have left their indelible marks on the streets and sights of the Village, if you know where to look. Joyce Gold, area expert and author of From Trout Stream to Bohemia: A Walking Guide to Greenwich Village History, certainly does, and she will introduce walkers to the defining characteristics of this unique neighborhood.

Highlights include:
       — Past and present luminaries, including Stanford White, Margaret Sanger, Bella Abzug, Eleanor Roosevelt and Ed Koch
       — The old hanging elm, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, and coffee houses of the Beat Generation
       — The stories behind street names, graveyards, and architectural sites
       — The histories of New York landmarks including the Washington Arch and the Jefferson Courthouse Library
       — Residential architectural styles of the 19th century
       — Rocco's pastry, Murray's Cheese, and other stores with delicious food

Participants on the tour will learn how the distinct neighborhoods of the Village came to beÑthe trendy East Village, the exclusive Washington Square area and the more artisan West VillageÑand will learn about the landmarking and preservation controversies that go on to this day.

The tour begins at the Washington Arch, Fifth Avenue below 8th Street. The tour costs $15 per person ($3 discount for seniors 65+) and no reservations are needed, but any questions can be directed to Joyce Gold - click on Contact.

Joyce Gold, instructor of Manhattan history at New School and New York Universities, conducts these walks. With a M.A. in Metropolitan Studies from NYU, she has contributed to the Encyclopedia of New York City and is the author of From Windmills to the World Trade Center: A Walking Guide through Lower Manhattan History and From Trout Stream to Bohemia: A Walking Guide through Greenwich Village History.
